The challenge

Nightfern sells a magnesium powder that people stir into a warm drink before bed. Health claims get close attention from ad platforms, and Nightfern’s earlier creator videos kept drifting into trouble. A creator would say it “fixed” her insomnia, the ad would be rejected, and two weeks of work went in the bin. Nobody could blame the creators: the brief had told them to talk about sleep, and they had. Legal review had become the slowest step in the marketing team’s month.

What we did

We rewrote the brief around routine. Creators filmed their real evenings: phone on the charger, mug, book, lights off. The product appears as one step in the routine, and nobody promises a medical outcome. That took some discipline, so we built it into the process.

  • A must-not-say list at the top of the brief, covering words like “cure”, “treat” and “insomnia”
  • Approved talking points, with room for creators to put them in their own words
  • A claims check on every first cut before it reached Nightfern’s reviewer

What changed

Across three rounds and 30 videos, no ad was rejected, and legal review dropped from about a week to a day or two. The marketing team got its month back, and creators said the new brief was easier to film, since a routine needs no memorising.

The calm format also sold better. Cost per subscriber fell 29%, and the slow, quiet videos did especially well late in the evening, which may be the most on-brand number in the account. Nightfern has since moved its whole creator programme onto the same brief.

Our lawyer used to be the busiest person in marketing. Now she mostly sends back thumbs-up emojis.
